Akron, PA Real Estate, Homes for Sale & MLS

About Akron, PA

One of the first buildings in Akron, PA was a log cabin, built in 1724 by fur traders from Philadelphia who met the Indians each spring when they came to drink the healing waters of the local springs. A farmhouse and barn came later, and eventually Clayton Wenger opened a bottled spring water business, and called the property Bond Spring Farm. There are original land grants from Thomas, John and Richard Penn, sons of William Penn recorded in Harrisburg for farms in the area.

Akron became a borough in 1895, and there were more than 50 cigar factories in the area. The Miller Hess Shoe Company contributed to the borough's economic welfare until it closed in 1985. Route 272 cuts through the town on Seventh Street. Akron is set amidst rolling farm land and has a small town flavor. It lies between Lancaster and Ephrata and is not far from the Pennsylvania Turnpike.
