Lancaster County is known primarily as the home of the Amish and Mennonites. However, members of other religions and sects settled there. The buildings at the Ephrata Cloisters are testimony to the diversity of religion in early Lancaster County Ephrata PA is named after a Biblical town in Israel named Ephrath. The Ephrata Cloisters housed an early American religious community established in 1732 by German immigrants, led by John Conrad Beissel. The community consisted of celibate brothers and sisters as well as a married congregation. Known for their music, printing and calligraphy, a religious group known as the German Seventh Day Baptists lived there from 1813 until 1934. A tourist favorite, the 18th century buildings are well maintained. Ephrata was never an industrial town, but was mainly a summer resort because of the springs which attracted those seeking their benefits. The Green Dragon Farmers' Market, open every Friday, attracts tourists and locals alike. On Sundays, just up Route 272, you'll find world famous Antique Alley. Ephrata Performing Arts Center offers year-round community theater and has been widely recognized as one of the most popular and THE most diverse theater in this area.  Ephrata can be reached by taking route 222 north from route 30 or south from EXIT 286 of the PA Turnpike.
